I left this watch genre for several years but this spring the itch came back with a vengeance. Searching the pre-owned market for a couple months, nothing was just right. So I took matters into my own hands and ordered a couple new fliegers. I’ve always been a fan of simple, uncluttered dials. And boy do these Germans deliver with no logo, no date and a cool vintage vibe! Both are hand wound and thin too! Initial impressions: Based on appearance: The Stowa is the one I want to wear more (ironically they both arrived at the same time). Stowa Flieger Klassik 40: Dashingly handsome all around, well finished at the price point, those thermally blued hands really pop more than other pilot watches I’ve owned, very nice, substantial strap, wearable 40 mm size. The only thing I’d change is I’d make it a solid case back versus a see through. Alas, Stowa said this was not an option at this time. Laco Stuttgart Pro 40: Cool bead blasted case, solid case back, highly customizable German pilot. The only thing I’d change is I’d make it a non screw down crown, versus a screw down crown. When Laco increased water resistance for this model, they added a screw down crown. Likely not a deal breaker, but sometimes when you want to wind, you just want to wind (instead of unscrew, wind, screw in). From an ordering and customer service standpoint: Both were swift with frequent email communication and quick delivery. From order start to delivery, each took approx 1.5 weeks to arrive to me in Northeast USA from Germany. I’m impressed with the customer service and would order again. Both came in a very nice box / package, but the Stowa especially spoke to me in the wood box, which I think is a really nice touch. Also, these are an excellent reminder you don’t have to break the bank or spend a fortune to get a kick ass watch. Ok, on to the pics!
