2014 PANERAI CLASSIC YACHTS CHALLENGE NORTH AMERICAN CIRCUIT SETS SAIL FROM MARBLEHEAD, MA

Officine Panerai celebrates 10 Years of Passion for classic sailing with the launch of a commemorative timepiece as the PCYC NA Circuit kicks off in New England

Nationally recognized as the birthplace of the American Navy, Marblehead’s deep nautical roots and yachting history makes the small New England town one of the most recognized sailing destinations in the world. Since the launch of the Corinthian Classic Yacht Challenge over 30 years ago, competitors from around the world have flocked to Marblehead to participate in what has become a pivotal regatta on the international circuit.

This year’s Corinthian Classic Yacht Challenge not only marks the start of the 2014 PCYC North American Circuit, but also kicks off Officine Panerai’s North American celebration of the 10th anniversary of Officine Panerai’s title sponsorship of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge (PCYC) – a series that has grown to 11 classic yachting regattas worldwide and pays tribute to the brand’s historical ties to the sea.

Officine Panerai’s intrinsic connection with the sea dates back to March 1936, when the commandos of the Italian Navy tested the first Officine Panerai timepiece prototype created in response to the military’s request to develop a luminous underwater watch. Ever since that important milestone in the Brand’s history, Officine Panerai has been associated with the sea and admired for the historic and innovative nautical instruments the company has been producing for over a century. Since 2006, Panerai North America has been celebrating the Brand’s nautical heritage by bringing together the captains and crews of some of the world’s most majestic classic sailing vessels for three weekends of competition, sportsmanship and camaraderie off the beautiful coastline of New England.

To celebrate these 10 Years of Passion for classic sailing, Officine Panerai will introduce the commemorative Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Titanio – 47 MM (PAM 00571). The PAM 00571 watch features Officine Panerai’s in-house P.9000 movement, with a seconds counter at nine o’clock and the classic date window at 3 o’clock. Its screw-down back and crown guard lever make this timepiece water-resistant to 300 meters, while a unidirectional rotating bezel allows wearers to time their dives. The partly-skeletonized, luminescent hands also guarantee excellent visibility even in very deep water. In addition, the watch features a Panerai rubber strap and trapezoidal brushed titanium buckle.

HEALING SAILS – A PANERAI-MARBLEHEAD TRADITION

As has become Panerai’s tradition with each North American regatta they host, Panerai, along with the non-profit organization which they founded three years ago, Sailing Heals, will host an afternoon of community sails off the shores of Marblehead. Panerai’s North American team and Marblehead-based Host Captains will welcome patients and caregivers from Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center for a harborside lunch and a relaxing sail around Marblehead. To date, with the help of Panerai and Sailing Heals’ volunteer Host Captains, Sailing Heals has taken more than 800 patients and their caregivers our for healing sails in New England and other beautiful sailing ports of call. Sailing Heals’ mission is to provide unique sailing and boating experiences to individuals, families, caregivers and staff who may be experiencing a health setback or loss and can benefit from a congenial, peaceful day on the water.

NEXT STOPS FOR THE PCYC: NANTUCKET AND NEWPORT

Following the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta, the 2014 PCYC North American Circuit will continue on to the Opera House Cup (August 17th, Nantucket, MA) and the Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta (August 30th – 31st, Newport, RI). The overall winner of each regatta will be awarded a coveted Panerai timepiece, with the 2014 Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta Prize Giving Ceremony taking place on Sunday, August 10th with all of the participants in attendance to applaud the winners. Last year’s winner of the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta, the 1938 yawl BLACK WATCH, took home the Luminor Base Logo Acciaio – 44MM (PAM 000).

The final prize-giving for the 2014 PCYC North American Circuit takes place in Newport, RI on Sunday, August 31st.

OFFICINE PANERAI

Founded in Florence in 1860 as a workshop, shop and school of watch-making, for many decades Officine Panerai supplied the Italian Navy in general, and its specialist diving corps in particular, with precision instruments. The designs developed by Panerai in that time, including the Luminor and Radiomir, were covered by the Military Secrets Act for many years and were launched on the international market only after the brand was acquired by the Richemont Group in 1997. Today Officine Panerai develops and crafts its movements and watches at its Neuchâtel manufacture. The latter are a seamless melding of Italian design flair and history with Swiss watch-making expertise. Panerai watches are sold across the world through an exclusive network of distributors and Panerai boutiques. For more information, please visit www.panerai.com om.

PANERAI CLASSIC YACHTS CHALLENGE

In honor of its historic links to the sea, Officine Panerai has promoted classic sailing culture for many years through its sponsorship of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, the leading international circuit for these vintage craft. In 2007, the company also acquired and restored the Bermudan ketch Eilean. Built in 1936 by the legendary Fife yard at Fairlie in Scotland, she is now the brand’s ambassador at vintage and classic boat rallies and regattas.
