The National Championship Air Races in Reno, NV, which Breitling is a Presenting Sponsor of, provided the ultimate setting for the international unveiling of the brand new watch that performs an impressive array of functions. To mark the occasion, Breitling Vice President Jean Paul Girardin joined world famous aviators including former astronaut Mark Kelly and Red Bull Air Race competitor Nigel Lamb to introduce the new timepiece to crowds of pilots and enthusiasts. The ultimate aviators’ chronograph, the Cockpit B50 is a multi-function electronic chronograph equipped with an exclusive in-house SuperQuartz movement, the B50 Caliber.

BREITLING UNVEILS ULTIMATE PILOT’S CHRONOGRAPH AT THE 51ST ANNUAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AIR RACES IN RENO, NV

Longtime Supporter of the Air Races Releases New Manufactured Quartz Movement at One of the World’s Premier Air Racing Events, Surrounded by Aviation Legends

“Breitling is thrilled to introduce the Cockpit B50 at the 51st annual National Championship Air Races,” said Breitling USA President Thierry Prissert. “Breitling has long been a favorite of pilots, and the new Cockpit B50 contains the latest technology and perform any function a pilot could need, while being extremely wearable. For example, a simple tilt of the wrist automatically activates the dial’s backlight so it is readable in all conditions. Even recharging the battery is simple, as it easily plugs into a USB port or traditional electrical socket.”

The Cockpit B50 is distinguished by its exclusive new Breitling Caliber B50: a SuperQuartz™ movement ten times more accurate than standard quartz and chronometer-certified by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), the highest benchmark in terms of reliability and precision. Additional functions include split-time and fly back capabilities, as well as a second time zone display, a perpetual calendar, two alarms in buzzer and/or vibrate mode, a lap timer function and a countdown complete with alarm. Breitling has also equipped it with innovative functions such as an electronic tachometer, a countdown/count-up system serving to switch directly from a countdown to a timing operation, as well as an eminently aviation-style “chrono-flight” device which is useful for recording flight times by memorizing departure and arrival times as well as the date. Another special feature is its use of UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, the aviation reference time) as the time base, which enables the Cockpit B50 to ensure smooth juggling with time zones. Breitling has developed an innovative miniaturized rechargeable battery system; charging can be done via the electricity grid or through a USB port on a computer. The Cockpit B50 also has an ultra readable display - the two white-on-black liquid crystal (LCD) screens are equipped with a unique backlighting system that offers four levels of brightness and is activated by pressing in the crown or by tilting the wrist.

“The National Championship Air Races provided the ideal setting for this international launch, and Breitling is thrilled to once again be the Title Sponsor in Reno after being a supporter for more than a decade,” said Breitling USA President Thierry Prissert. “To combine the launch of this incredibly smart

watch with the epic races this weekend is recognizes how cutting edge technology and aviation heritage come together and direct our visions of the future. It is also very special to be able to introduce a limited edition version of the Cockpit B50 for the men and women who are here at the Races because they love aviation.”

A special limited edition version of the Cockpit B50 will be sold exclusively during the race weekend. Only 25 timepieces will be produced, all of which will feature the National Championship Air Races logo on both the dial. Available exclusively at the Breitling Chalet during the races, the timepiece commemorates the 51st anniversary of the National Championship Air Races.

In addition to introducing the Cockpit B50, guests will also be treated to shows by Breitling champion aerobatic pilot David Martin, and thrilling races, including the race between five time reigning champion Steve Hinton in Voodoo flying against his mentor and returning seven-time racing champion Bill “Tiger” Destefani in Strega.

ABOUT BREITLING: A specialist of technical watches, Breitling has played a crucial role in the development of the wrist chronograph and is a leader in this complication. Léon Breitling founded the company in 1884 in St. Imier, Switzerland, and chose to devote himself to the exclusive and demanding field of chronographs and timers. Breitling developed the first independent chronograph pushpiece in 1915 and then added the second pushpiece in 1934 to complete the final configuration of the modern chronograph. In 1969, the brand introduced the first self-winding chronograph movement. Today Breitling is the world’s only major watch brand to equip all its models with chronometer-certified movements, the ultimate token of precision. Breitling is one of the rare companies to produce its own mechanical chronograph movement, entirely developed and manufactured in its state-of-the-art workshops with its quality guaranteed by an unprecedented five-year warranty. This family business is also one of the last remaining independent Swiss watch brands, celebrating its 130-year anniversary this year in 2014.
